India is accelerating the adoption of piped natural gas (PNG) as part of its response to evolving energy supply challenges. With disruptions in global LPG supply chains linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, authorities are encouraging a shift towards PNG for both households and industries.
This transition is supported by policy measures aimed at ensuring continuity in fuel access while reducing dependence on conventional LPG distribution systems.
Since March, more than five lakh new PNG connections have been activated, indicating a steady increase in adoption. In addition, over 5.6 lakh consumers have registered for new connections, reflecting growing interest in piped gas solutions.
These figures include both pending applications processed recently and new registrations following recent supply concerns.
The government has encouraged LPG users located within PNG network areas to transition to piped gas.
At the same time, administrative steps have been taken to speed up approvals for pipeline infrastructure, ensuring quicker access to PNG connections. This approach aims to reduce pressure on LPG distribution systems while improving supply reliability.
Despite global disruptions, domestic LPG supply has remained stable, with no reported shortages at distribution centres. Digital adoption in LPG booking has increased, with online transactions accounting for a significant share. Measures such as authentication-based delivery systems have also been strengthened to improve transparency and reduce leakages.
Commercial LPG availability has been partially restored, reaching around 70 per cent of pre-disruption levels. Sales data indicates continued demand, with significant volumes distributed across the country during April.
To address the needs of migrant workers and lower-income groups, the government has increased the availability of smaller 5-kg LPG cylinders. Daily supply volumes have been raised, and targeted outreach efforts have supported distribution. Since late March, sales of these smaller cylinders have seen a noticeable rise.
Natural gas supplies have been prioritised for city gas distribution networks, ensuring uninterrupted access for domestic PNG and transport CNG users. Additional allocations have also been directed towards fertiliser plants and industrial sectors, supporting economic activity alongside household consumption.

India’s push towards piped natural gas reflects a broader effort to manage energy supply risks while promoting alternative fuel adoption. With infrastructure expansion and policy support, PNG is emerging as a viable complement to LPG, particularly during periods of global supply uncertainty.
