India is reportedly examining requests from several neighbouring countries seeking supplies of petroleum products, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said during its weekly media briefing.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that requests have been received from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The proposals are currently being reviewed.

As per the new reports, officials said any decision will take into account India’s refining capacity, domestic demand and the availability of petroleum products, particularly diesel.

Bangladesh Seeks Additional Diesel Supply

Among the requests received, the Bangladesh government has asked India for additional diesel supplies. The request is under consideration, according to the MEA.

Diesel exports from India to Bangladesh have largely continued since 2017, based on existing commercial arrangements. Jaiswal said decisions regarding further supply will depend on India’s domestic requirements and fuel availability, along with the country’s refining capacity.

Long-Standing Diesel Supply Arrangements

India has been supplying diesel to Bangladesh for several years through different transport routes.

According to the MEA, Numaligarh Refinery Limited has supplied diesel to Bangladesh since 2007 using waterways and railway transport. Later, supply was also enabled through the India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline.

In October 2017, Numaligarh Refinery signed a sale and purchase agreement with Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation for the supply of high-speed diesel under mutually agreed commercial terms.

Other Requests from the Region

India has also received requests for petroleum supplies from Sri Lanka and the Maldives, the MEA said. These proposals are being assessed by the government while considering India’s internal energy needs and available fuel supplies.

India remains one of the region’s major exporters of refined petroleum products, supplying fuel to several neighbouring countries under commercial arrangements.

Indian Nationals in Iran

During the briefing, the MEA also provided an update on Indian nationals in Iran. The ministry said around 9,000 Indians are currently in the country, including students, seafarers, professionals, business persons and pilgrims.

Following advisories issued on January 14 and February 23, several Indian nationals, mostly students, have returned to India. The Indian mission in Tehran has also relocated some citizens to safer locations.

Conclusion

The MEA said requests for petroleum supplies from neighbouring countries are being examined. Decisions will depend on India’s fuel availability, refining capacity and domestic energy requirements.
