On August 20, 2026, India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Japan's counterpart Shinjiro Koizumi convened in New Delhi to discuss enhancing maritime security cooperation.

An agreement was reached to intensify naval coordination and explore joint development in shipbuilding, a move to further defence relations in the Indo-Pacific.

They signed a Memorandum of Arrangement for Maritime Security Cooperation, setting a foundation for close ties between the Indian Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

In addition, this pact seeks to advance collaboration in Maritime Domain Awareness, including search and rescue operations and humanitarian assistance. The nations aim to protect sea lines through reciprocal naval visits, joint exercises, and logistical support.

Joint Naval Initiatives and Exercises

India and Japan plan to maximise synergies to enhance mine countermeasure capabilities and collaborate on naval shipbuilding using Japan's technological capabilities and India's production strengths. They will discuss Japan's use of India's production capabilities under the "Make in India" framework and work towards reciprocal access to ship repair facilities.

Additionally, the two countries look forward to expanding their military exercises. The Japan-India Army exercise Dharma Guardian and maritime exercise JAIMEX continue to develop, while preparations are underway for the Japan-India Air Force exercise Veer Guardian, scheduled for later this year.
