India and France agree to cooperate on critical minerals, establishing a joint technology group and advanced materials centre, while reaffirming global stability commitments.

India and France have signed a declaration of intent to deepen cooperation in critical minerals, encompassing exploration, extraction, processing, and recycling technologies, as per ANI report. 

Bilateral Cooperation Highlights 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Emmanuel Macron agreed to create diversified, sustainable supply chains for critical minerals and rare earths.  

A joint advanced technology development group will be constituted, alongside a centre for advanced materials between India's Department of Science and Technology and France's CNRS. 

Strategic and Economic Significance 

Critical minerals are essential for green technologies, digital economies, and advanced manufacturing.  

The partnership aims to reduce supply chain vulnerabilities and support emerging technologies. Both nations also amended their double tax avoidance agreement. 

Indo-Pacific Collaboration 

Both leaders reaffirmed commitment to a rules-based Indo-Pacific region, enhancing cooperation under the 2018 Joint Strategic Vision and 2023 Indo-Pacific Roadmap.  

Initiatives include solar energy training via the International Solar Alliance and disaster resilience projects under the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructures.

Multilateral Reform Advocacy 

India and France called for reformed multilateralism to address global challenges, emphasizing UN Security Council reform.  

They highlighted progress in the Indo-Pacific Triangular Development Cooperation, focusing on climate and SDG projects in digital startups, health, and infrastructure.
