India has taken a decisive step in its clean energy transition, awarding 862,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production capacity to 19 companies under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The announcement came from Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shripad Naik, during the FICCI Green Hydrogen Summit 2025 in New Delhi.
Naik said India aims to capture about 10% of global green hydrogen demand, which is projected to exceed 100 million metric tonnes by 2030. “We want to make India not only a major producer but also a global hub for green hydrogen exports,” he remarked. Alongside production awards, the government has allocated 3,000 megawatts of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 companies.
India’s growing renewable base underpins these ambitions, with cumulative capacity at 237 GW as of June 2025, including 119 GW solar, 52 GW wind, and 49 GW large hydro. With an additional 8.78 GW from nuclear, non-fossil fuels already account for more than half of installed generation.
As per news reports, Industry leaders at the summit acknowledged both government momentum and evolving market conditions. Rajat Seksaria, Chair of FICCI’s Green Hydrogen Committee and CEO of Adani New Industries, credited the Production Linked Incentive scheme, the green ammonia auction, and ongoing policy engagement as critical enablers.
Vipul Tuli, Chair of FICCI’s Renewable Energy CEOs Committee and Chairman of Sembcorp India, flagged a major shift, noting, “In one of the global tenders, green hydrogen has actually come out cheaper than blue hydrogen. This is a very significant development.”
As per the news reports, the summit also reinforced India’s international partnerships. Ewa Suwara, Chargé d’affaires of the EU Delegation to India, recalled the second India-EU Green Hydrogen Forum in Rotterdam in May 2025, where both sides agreed to establish a Hydrogen Task Force. “Both the EU and India are well aware of the potential of green hydrogen in addressing today’s and tomorrow’s energy challenges,” she said.

With capacity awards, manufacturing allocations, and clear policy backing, India is positioning itself as a frontrunner in the global green hydrogen race. Coupled with strong industry participation and international cooperation, the nation is building momentum towards its goal of becoming both a major producer and a global hub for green hydrogen exports.
