The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Maharashtra, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. The weather advisory covers multiple districts across western, central and eastern parts of the state.
The IMD has linked the prevailing weather conditions to a low-pressure area over eastern India and associated atmospheric systems. Rainfall activity is expected to remain concentrated in isolated locations across the affected regions.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Sangli, Solapur, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Dharashiv, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha and Yavatmal. The department has warned of heavy rainfall at isolated places in these districts.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph are also expected in some locations. Residents in these areas may experience changing weather conditions during the forecast period.
According to the IMD, the low-pressure area that was previously located over north Odisha and adjoining Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal has shifted. The system is now centred over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand and north Odisha.
Its associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. The weather agency has indicated that the system is likely to weaken gradually over the next 24 hours.
The monsoon trough currently extends from Amritsar through Chandigarh, Shahjahanpur, Basti and Patna before reaching the low-pressure area and further extending into the northeast Bay of Bengal. This feature continues to influence rainfall distribution across several regions.
Meanwhile, a trough stretching from the cyclonic circulation to the east-central Arabian Sea has become less marked. The weakening of this trough suggests a gradual reduction in weather activity linked to the system.
The IMD stated that monsoon conditions remain weak over the Vidarbha region. Rainfall activity has largely been confined to isolated areas, with most locations receiving light showers and only a few pockets recording moderate rainfall.
Temperatures have remained above normal across the region despite ongoing monsoon activity. Akola recorded the highest maximum temperature at 37°C, while Yavatmal reported the lowest minimum temperature at 20.8°C.

The IMD's latest weather bulletin highlights the possibility of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds across 16 districts in Maharashtra. The alert is linked to a low-pressure area and associated atmospheric conditions affecting parts of eastern and central India.
While rainfall activity is expected in isolated locations, weather systems influencing the state are also showing signs of gradual weakening. Authorities and residents in the affected districts will continue to monitor weather developments as the monsoon progresses.
