Household LPG consumption in India declined 8% year-on-year in March, as supply disruptions triggered by geopolitical tensions, including the Iran conflict, impacted availability. As per news reports, state-run oil companies prioritised domestic household demand while cutting supplies to commercial and bulk users to manage the shortfall.
Data from the oil ministry showed that overall LPG sales dropped 13% during the month, reflecting the broader impact of reduced imports and supply chain adjustments.
The sharpest decline was seen in the commercial LPG segment, where consumption fell 48% in March. Bulk LPG supplies, largely catering to industrial users, plunged 75.5%, indicating significant stress in non-household demand.
In contrast, auto LPG consumption rose 30.6%, suggesting relatively stable demand from the transport segment despite the broader supply constraints.
Industry executives noted that disruptions in LPG imports (nearly 90% of which come from Gulf nations) had a cascading effect across all segments. However, supplies to households were largely protected, especially in urban areas, to avoid disruptions in essential cooking fuel availability.
India imports around 60% of its LPG requirements, making it vulnerable to global supply shocks. In March, LPG imports fell 40% year-on-year, according to shipping data, significantly tightening supply.
To offset this, domestic LPG production increased by 27%, providing partial relief. Meanwhile, refiners processed 5.55 million barrels per day of crude oil, down 2% from a year ago, while overall crude imports declined 17%.
Despite lower volumes, the crude import bill fell only 5% to $11.7 billion in March, highlighting the impact of global price fluctuations.
In response to the supply crunch, the government temporarily halted LPG supplies to commercial users and prioritised household consumption. Refill demand initially surged—nearly doubling, amid fears of shortages, but has since stabilised.
Authorities also extended refill intervals to 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural regions to manage demand and prevent stockpiling.

The decline in LPG sales underscores the vulnerability of India’s energy supply chain to geopolitical disruptions. While swift policy measures helped safeguard household consumption, the sharp fall in commercial demand highlights the broader economic impact of supply constraints. Moving forward, balancing imports, domestic production, and demand management will remain critical to ensuring energy security.
