Haryana has secured World Bank approval for a ₹4,000 crore loan to support the implementation of the Jal Sanrakshit Haryana project, a large-scale initiative focused on water conservation, irrigation modernisation, and sustainable resource management.

The project, with a total outlay of ₹5,714 crore, will be implemented between 2026 and 2032 across multiple districts in the state.

Large-Scale Water Security Programme Planned

The programme will cover 15 clusters spread across 48.94 lakh acres, targeting improved water availability and efficient resource utilisation.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening Haryana's long-term water security while supporting agricultural productivity and rural development.

Canal Rehabilitation Forms Key Component

A major focus of the project is the rehabilitation and modernisation of canal infrastructure.

Officials said the programme will cover the remaining 678 canals in the state, with 106 canals being restored through World Bank assistance, while the rest will be supported through state funding and NABARD-backed projects.

Irrigation Network to Be Expanded

The project will rehabilitate 620 water channels, benefiting approximately 3.18 lakh acres of agricultural land.

Additionally, 120 canal-based micro-irrigation projects will be upgraded, extending irrigation facilities to nearly 56,830 acres.

Focus On Sustainable Agriculture

The programme includes measures aimed at improving agricultural sustainability and water-use efficiency.

Key initiatives include the reclamation of around two lakh acres of waterlogged land, promotion of direct seeded rice (DSR) across five lakh acres, and crop diversification on approximately 1.12 lakh acres.

Groundwater Recharge and Wastewater Reuse

To improve groundwater resources, 147 water bodies will be developed across seven districts, including Bhiwani, Jind, Kaithal, Mahendragarh, Rewari, Charkhi Dadri, and Sirsa.

The project also plans to reuse treated wastewater from sewage treatment plants in Jind, Kaithal, and Gurugram for irrigation purposes, covering nearly 28,000 acres.

Conclusion

The Jal Sanrakshit Haryana project represents one of the state's largest water management initiatives, backed by a ₹4,000 crore World Bank loan. Through canal modernisation, irrigation expansion, groundwater recharge, and sustainable farming practices, the programme aims to enhance long-term water security and strengthen Haryana's agricultural infrastructure.
