India may expand the role of ethanol beyond transport fuel as policymakers assess its use in commercial kitchens amid ongoing LPG supply constraints.

Shift Driven by Supply Vulnerability

The move comes after recent disruptions in LPG availability, which exposed the risks of relying heavily on imported cooking fuel.

Commercial users such as restaurants and hotels have been the most affected, prompting discussions around alternative energy sources.

As per news reports, officials are now evaluating whether ethanol can act as a parallel fuel option to reduce such supply-side risks.

Focus On Commercial-Scale Adoption

Instead of a household rollout, the initial focus is likely to remain on large-scale kitchens where adoption can be implemented more efficiently.

A proposal is being prepared for review by an inter-ministerial group, which will assess feasibility, logistics and safety before any policy rollout.

Surplus Ethanol Creates Opportunity

India has built significant ethanol production capacity in recent years, leaving a sizable surplus after meeting blending requirements in petrol.

This excess capacity is now being viewed as an opportunity to diversify usage and improve returns on existing investments in the biofuel ecosystem.

Cost And Efficiency Trade-Off

Ethanol offers a potential cost advantage compared to commercial LPG, especially in its less processed form. However, it delivers lower energy output per unit, meaning higher consumption volumes may be required.

Even so, its domestic availability and cleaner-burning nature make it a viable option for selective applications.

Conclusion

The ethanol cooking fuel proposal reflects a broader shift towards energy diversification, though its adoption will depend on economic viability and execution readiness.
