The Civil Aviation Ministry has announced the removal of the temporary cap on domestic airfares, effective March 23, 2026. This cap was initially imposed due to significant flight disruptions experienced by IndiGo in December 2025.

Details of the Airfare Cap Removal

On March 23, 2026, the government will withdraw the temporary cap on domestic airfares. This decision follows a review of the current operating conditions within the aviation sector.

The cap was initially put in place on December 6, 2025, to control a sharp rise in ticket prices after large-scale disruptions in IndiGo's operations.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has confirmed that the situation has stabilised, with capacity restored and operations normalised across the sector.

Airlines Urged to Maintain Pricing Discipline

While lifting the cap, the ministry has urged airlines to ensure that fares remain reasonable and transparent.

Airlines are expected to price tickets in a manner commensurate with market conditions, ensuring that passenger interests are not adversely impacted.

The ministry has warned against any excessive or unjustified surge in ticket prices, especially during peak demand or disruptions.

Monitoring of Airfare Trends

The ministry has stated that airfare trends will be monitored in real time to check for irregular pricing. This step is crucial to prevent any sharp fare spikes that could affect passengers negatively.

The decision to lift the cap comes at a time when airlines are also dealing with disruptions on international routes amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.

Conclusion

The government's decision to lift the airfare cap from March 23, 2026, marks a significant step towards normalising the aviation sector after the disruptions faced by IndiGo. Airlines are expected to maintain pricing discipline to ensure fair ticket pricing for passengers.
