The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has notified Navi Mumbai Airport as a designated port for the import of drugs into India, as per the PIB report.
The decision follows an amendment to Rule 43A of the Drugs Rules, 1945, allowing pharmaceutical consignments to enter the country through the newly inaugurated airport.
With the latest notification, Navi Mumbai Airport has been added to the list of airports authorised to handle drug imports.
The amendment was issued after consultation with the Drugs Technical Advisory Board under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
The inclusion of Navi Mumbai Airport increases the total number of notified road, rail, sea and air ports of entry for drug imports to 42.
The additional entry point is expected to improve the movement of pharmaceutical consignments while providing importers with greater operational flexibility.
According to the ministry, the amendment will strengthen India's pharmaceutical logistics infrastructure by offering another gateway for importing medicines.
The move is also expected to facilitate smoother supply chains and support the efficient movement of imported pharmaceutical products across the country.
The notification forms part of the government's broader efforts to strengthen the regulatory framework governing imported drugs.
It also aligns with initiatives aimed at improving trade facilitation, promoting Ease of Doing Business, and maintaining effective regulatory oversight of pharmaceutical imports.
