After achieving the target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol, the government is preparing to extend its biofuel programme towards diesel via isobutanol blending later this year, as per the news reports.
The initiative is aimed at reducing dependence on imported crude oil and marks the next phase of the country's biofuel programme.
As per the news report, Girish Wagh, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tata Motors, said the company will begin pilot trials using 2% isobutanol-blended diesel in the next quarter.
Tata Motors is working with HPCL to procure the blended fuel required for the trials. Wagh added that although isobutanol has a lower calorific value than diesel, a 2% blending ratio is not expected to materially affect vehicle performance.
Isobutanol is a type of advanced biofuel alcohol that can be blended with diesel, resulting in lower emissions, improved combustion and reduced dependency on fossil fuels.
Earlier, V Umashankar, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, had indicated that a mandate for isobutanol blending in diesel is expected to begin later this year.
The proposed blending programme is significant for the commercial vehicle segment, where diesel continues to be the dominant fuel.
While electric mobility and natural gas-powered vehicles have expanded in recent years, medium and heavy-duty trucks operating on long-haul routes remain largely diesel-powered.

The proposed diesel blending programme marks the next phase of India's biofuel initiative, with pilot trials and policy measures focused on introducing isobutanol into the country's diesel fuel ecosystem.
