The Central Government has extended the deadline for the procurement of maize under the Minimum Support Price mechanism. The extension applies to the Kharif 2025–26 season and pushes the cutoff date to April 30.
Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal confirmed the development on Wednesday. The decision follows representations made by the Maharashtra government regarding pending procurement.
Chhagan Bhujbal announced the extension through an official government release issued in Maharashtra. He stated that the Centre approved the request after considering the state’s submission.
The decision specifically applies to maize procurement undertaken at the MSP fixed for the season. Only farmers who had completed prior registration are eligible for procurement during the extended period.
The original deadline for procurement of coarse grains for the Kharif 2025–26 season was February 28. This deadline covered jowar, bajra, maize, and ragi under the MSP framework.
Maize procurement was subsequently extended until March 31 through a separate decision. The latest extension further provides an additional 30 days exclusively for maize purchases.
The Maharashtra government sought a further extension as several registered maize farmers were unable to sell their produce earlier. According to the state’s assessment, market arrivals continued beyond March due to harvesting timelines and logistics.
This resulted in unsold produce among eligible farmers despite registration. The request was submitted to ensure MSP access for these farmers without any procedural lapses.
The Centre approved the extension subject to defined operational conditions. The procured maize must meet quality benchmarks prescribed by procurement agencies.
The stock must also be certified as fit for human consumption before acceptance. Additionally, the entire quantity must be distributed before the next procurement season to prevent recycling of old stock.
The extension of the maize procurement deadline till April 30 provides regulatory relief to farmers in Maharashtra. It enables completion of MSP procurement for the Kharif 2025–26 season within a revised timeframe.
The decision reflects coordination between the state and central governments. It also reiterates adherence to quality and distribution safeguards within the procurement system.
