The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a clarification regarding the Aadhaar‑based eKYC process for LPG consumers following reports suggesting it had been made mandatory for all users. The ministry stated that the requirement applies only to customers who have not yet completed biometric authentication.

It emphasised that no new directive has been issued and that the earlier communication was part of ongoing efforts to encourage completion of pending eKYC. The clarification also confirms that LPG deliveries will continue uninterrupted regardless of eKYC status.

Who Needs to Complete eKYC?

The ministry clarified that Aadhaar-based biometric authentication is required only for LPG consumers who have not yet completed the process. Non-beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana who are already authenticated do not need to undergo verification again.

The clarification confirms that no new rules or notifications have been introduced. LPG supply will continue without disruption, and the requirement applies only to unauthenticated consumers.

Annual Requirement for PMUY Beneficiaries

For PMUY beneficiaries, the government has clarified that eKYC is required once every financial year, but only for those receiving DBT subsidies beyond 7 refills. Consumers with fewer than 7 refills in a year are not subject to this requirement.

Regular LPG users need to complete eKYC only if they are currently unauthenticated, while non-PMUY subsidy users who have already completed verification do not need to repeat it. This framework ensures targeted verification for subsidy recipients while avoiding unnecessary compliance for other consumers.

How To Complete eKYC From Home?

  1. Visit the official website of your LPG provider.
  2. Download the mobile app of your oil marketing company (Indane, Bharat Gas or HP Gas).
  3. Download the Aadhaar FaceRD app.
  4. Follow the instructions in your LPG company’s app and complete facial authentication via FaceRD.

Ministry Highlights Aadhaar’s Role in Improving LPG Subsidy Delivery

The ministry stated that Aadhaar‑based verification helps improve the integrity of India’s LPG distribution ecosystem. Authentication enables identification of duplicate or inactive connections and protects subsidy mechanisms under schemes such as PMUY.

The government noted that accurate verification enhances transparency and ensures benefits are delivered to eligible households. It also supports better targeting of DBT subsidies, particularly for PMUY consumers who receive support for up to 12 refills a year.

Conclusion

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that Aadhaar‑based eKYC for LPG users is not mandatory for all customers. Only those who remain unauthenticated or PMUY beneficiaries receiving subsidies beyond seven refills need to complete the process.

No new directive has been issued, and customers who have already completed eKYC do not need to repeat it. The process is free, can be completed from home and does not impact LPG refill delivery.
