The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved two major elevated corridor projects in Varanasi with a combined investment of ₹25,445.96 crore. The infrastructure projects, to be executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), are aimed at easing traffic congestion, improving urban connectivity, and supporting the city's growing tourism and transport needs.

The two projects include an elevated corridor along the Varuna river and a greenfield elevated corridor along the Ganga river, together spanning nearly 90 kilometres.

Varuna Elevated Corridor to Improve Connectivity Across Varanasi

The first project involves the construction of a 43.218-km elevated corridor along the Varuna river at an estimated cost of ₹10,998.32 crore.

The corridor will connect NH-31 with the Varanasi Ring Road and Kashi Railway Station through a network of elevated roads, flyovers, ramps, loops, and service roads. According to the government, the project is expected to reduce travel time between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station from around 40 minutes to 20 minutes.

The corridor will also improve access to Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Ramnagar Port, the city's ghats, major railway stations, and neighbouring Chandauli district.

Ganga Corridor to Feature Cable-Stayed Bridge

The second project, costing ₹14,447.64 crore, involves the construction of a 46.039-km six-lane access-controlled elevated corridor along the Ganga river.

A key highlight of the project is a 910-metre cable-stayed bridge across the Ganga, along with a 1.32-km extradosed foot over bridge equipped with travelators. The project will also include rail overbridges, ramps, loops, and service roads.

Once completed, the corridor is expected to reduce average travel time across the project area from about 60 minutes to 20 minutes, while travel between NH-19 and Kashi Railway Station is expected to come down from nearly 50 minutes to 25 minutes.

Conclusion

The approval of these two elevated corridor projects marks another major investment in Varanasi's urban infrastructure. With improved road connectivity, faster travel times, and better access to key transport hubs and tourist destinations, the projects are expected to enhance mobility for residents and visitors while supporting the city's long-term economic and tourism growth. Construction will be undertaken by NHAI under the Hybrid Annuity Model.
