Local Manufacturing Boost: Government Approves Transfer of DRDO Missile Technology

On August 25, 2026, the Indian government advanced its initiative for self-reliance by authorising the transfer of all conventional missile technologies developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to domestic industries, as per PIB press release.
This decision aims to support local manufacturing and foster private sector involvement.
DRDO Missile Technology Transfer Approved
The approval to transfer DRDO missile technology aims to enhance the competence of domestic companies and boost India's defence production capabilities.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced this significant step towards the vision of self-reliance in defence as per the news report.
The Transfer of Technology (ToT) is designed to increase the participation of Indian industries in the defence ecosystem, enabling indigenous production within the country.
The statement indicates New Delhi's strategic objective to reduce its dependency on weapon imports, including those from Russia.
This move is in line with the government's ongoing effort to solidify a robust defence manufacturing industry in India.
Encouraging Domestic Participation
The Ministry of Defence highlighted that this technological transfer would strengthen India's defence industrial base and promote the participation of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and other technological partners in the supply chain.
The provision is intended to enable a successful transition from missile system development to industrial production, reflecting the DRDO's focus on leveraging the capabilities of the Indian industry for advanced defence systems development.
Previously, DRDO had invited private companies to partake in future development and production contracts, highlighting a shift towards increased private sector involvement in weapon manufacturing.
Furthermore, the Ministry issued a list covering 405 critical defence items, with a potential business opportunity of over ₹3,000 crore.

Conclusion
The government's approval to transfer DRDO missile technology to local industries underscores a commitment to enhancing domestic production capabilities. This initiative aims to reduce dependence on imports and supports a stronger defence industrial base, involving enterprises nationwide.
