The government has revised regulations concerning aviation turbine fuel (ATF), now permitting its blending with synthetic fuels. This change aims to support the use of cleaner and alternative aviation fuels, aligning with global sustainability goals.

New Definition of Aviation Turbine Fuel

Under the updated rules, the definition of aviation turbine fuel has been expanded. ATF is now defined as a complex mixture of hydrocarbons conforming to IS 1571 specification or its blend with synthesised hydrocarbons as specified in IS 17081.

This amendment is part of the Aviation Turbine Fuel (Regulation of Marketing) Amendment Order, 2026, which took effect immediately upon its publication in the Official Gazette on April 17, 2026.

Regulatory Changes and Implications

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued the notification under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955. The amendment also includes the omission of "IBP Co. Limited" from the principal order, reflecting changes in the market landscape.

Additionally, the provisions of section 103 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, concerning search and seizure, are now applicable to searches and seizures under this order.

By allowing the blending of synthetic hydrocarbons, the government aims to promote cleaner energy alternatives, thus supporting environmental sustainability initiatives.

Conclusion

The revised aviation fuel regulations mark a significant step towards cleaner aviation practices. By enabling the blending of ATF with synthetic fuels, the government is fostering innovation and sustainability in the aviation sector.
