The Advanced Multirole Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme has narrowed its list of bidders to three private sector firms after a technical evaluation of submissions from 7 Indian entities.
As per The Economic Times report, The Ministry of Defence shortlisted Tata Advanced Systems Limited, Larsen & Toubro and Bharat Forge. The evaluation considered technical expertise, manufacturing capability, order book size and financial strength.
Bidders had to demonstrate ability to absorb the AMCA design, experience in development, engineering, manufacturing, equipping and testing. A clause discouraged firms with a large outstanding order book.
The selected winner will collaborate with the Aeronautical Development Agency to build five AMCA prototypes. An indicative budget of ₹15,000 crore has been earmarked for this stage.
The final contract is expected to be several times larger once the aircraft is validated and ordered by the Indian Air Force.

The AMCA is classified as a fifth-generation fighter jet and is slated to become the primary aerial platform from the mid 2030s.
After development, 120 jets are expected in the first batch with deliveries beginning in 2035. The aircraft will incorporate stealth characteristics, artificial intelligence integration, long‑range targeting and the capability to operate jointly with unmanned systems.
The shortlist marks a shift towards greater private sector participation in high‑technology defence projects.
Excluding Hindustan Aeronautics Limited reflects the emphasis on technical and financial criteria over legacy status. The outcome will influence future collaborations between the defence establishment and Indian manufacturing giants.
The AMCA programme has identified Tata Advanced Systems, Larsen & Toubro and Bharat Forge as the remaining contenders for the next‑generation fighter jet contract, with a final decision expected within 3 months. The programme allocates ₹15,000 crore for prototype development and aims to deliver 120 jets from the mid 2030s.
