Urban air mobility startup Sarla Aviation has taken a significant step toward launching air taxi services in India by signing an agreement with Cochin International Airport (CIAL). The partnership aims to explore the development of vertiport infrastructure within or near Kochi Airport, positioning Kerala as a potential early adopter of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) mobility solutions.
The move reflects growing momentum in India’s emerging air mobility ecosystem, with companies exploring alternatives to traditional road and helicopter transport.
Sarla Aviation is evaluating multiple high-potential routes across Kerala, including Kochi to Munnar, Alleppey, Kovalam, Sabarimala, and Thrissur. While tourism is expected to be the initial driver of demand, the company is also targeting medical and pilgrimage travel segments.
The inclusion of religious and healthcare corridors signals a broader ambition to move beyond premium leisure services and build scalable, utility-driven applications for air taxis.
A key differentiator in Sarla Aviation’s strategy is its focus on emergency medical transport. The company is developing an ambulance configuration for its flagship eVTOL aircraft, SHUNYA, and has partnered with Aster Medcity in Kochi to explore healthcare use cases.
Highlighting the limitations of existing helicopter services, the company noted that high operating costs, limited helipad infrastructure, and lack of integrated emergency systems have restricted accessibility. Sarla aims to address these gaps by offering a more efficient and potentially cost-effective alternative.
On the technology front, Sarla Aviation has begun ground testing of its half-scale demonstrator, SYLLA SYL-X1, at its Bengaluru facility. With a 7.5-meter wingspan, the prototype represents one of the most advanced privately developed eVTOL platforms in India.
The aircraft is designed to validate structural integrity, propulsion systems, and safety architecture, serving as a critical step toward the development of a full-scale 15-meter wingspan model. The company stated that this phase marks a transition from conceptual design to real-world testing and certification readiness.
Sarla Aviation’s partnership with CIAL underscores the growing interest in next-generation mobility solutions in India. By combining infrastructure development, targeted route planning, and technological advancement, the company is positioning itself at the forefront of the air taxi segment. If successfully executed, the initiative could redefine regional connectivity and open new avenues for faster, more efficient transportation across Kerala.
