Over a month after the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) issued a notice to Ola, Uber India, and Rapido regarding their advance tipping feature, users still report the controversial practice on these platforms, as per a news report.
Namma Yatri has also come under scrutiny for displaying similar tipping options, raising questions about regulatory enforcement and consumer transparency.
Advance tipping, where users are prompted to tip drivers before a ride begins, has faced sharp criticism. Users claim the feature is misleading and creates undue pressure to tip without evaluating service quality. Complaints include default tip amounts, unclear opt-out mechanisms, and assumptions that tipping might influence ride acceptance.
The CCPA notice followed rising consumer complaints. Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi acknowledged the issue publicly, assuring strict action if unfair practices are confirmed. He highlighted that other platforms like Ola, Uber, and Rapido are under review and may face additional scrutiny.
Despite regulatory pressure, users report that tipping prompts are still live on all 4 apps: Ola, Uber, Rapido, and Namma Yatri. These appear during booking, payment or fare summary stages. Critics argue this embeds a non-consensual charge into the service experience, blurring the line between voluntary tipping and platform-imposed fees.

So far, only Uber has responded publicly, stating it continues to engage with authorities and has implemented app changes based on user feedback. Ola, Rapido, Namma Yatri, and the CCPA have not commented on the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, users on platforms like X and Reddit report confusion and frustration over the tipping model.
Though tipping is not illegal, placing it within the booking flow without explicit consent may constitute an unfair trade practice. Industry observers say this model shifts driver compensation responsibility onto users while platforms maintain commission margins, intensifying the debate around ethical pricing and service charges.
The continued presence of advanced tipping on Ola, Uber, Rapido, and Namma Yatri highlights persistent gaps between regulatory intent and platform execution. As user complaints mount, stronger enforcement and clearer disclosures may become necessary to restore trust and fairness in ride-hailing services.
