India's rooftop solar sector recorded its strongest-ever quarterly performance in the January–March 2026 period, with installations reaching a record 2.7 GW.

According to Mercom India Research, the milestone represents a 125% year-on-year increase and highlights the accelerating adoption of rooftop solar systems across the country.

Cumulative Rooftop Solar Capacity Reaches 23.5 GW

India's total installed rooftop solar capacity rose to 23.5 GW as of March 2026.

The growth was primarily driven by strong residential demand, aided by government incentives and streamlined implementation mechanisms under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat Lead Installations

Maharashtra emerged as the leading state during the quarter, accounting for over 17% of rooftop solar installations.

Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat followed closely, contributing more than 16% and 15% of installations, respectively.

Collectively, the top ten states accounted for around 80% of the country's cumulative rooftop solar capacity as of March 2026.

Residential Segment Dominates Growth

The residential segment contributed nearly 82% of rooftop solar installations during the quarter.

Industrial and commercial consumers accounted for 11% and 7% of additions, respectively, while government installations represented a marginal share of new capacity.

The trend underscores the growing role of households in India's clean energy transition.

PM Surya Ghar Scheme Drives Adoption

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has emerged as a key catalyst for rooftop solar adoption.

Launched in February 2024, the scheme provides subsidies of up to ₹78,000 for residential rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kW capacity and targets installations across one crore households.

Simplified approval processes and state-level implementation support have further accelerated adoption.

Supported by the PM Surya Ghar scheme and strong residential demand, the sector continues to play a vital role in the country's renewable energy expansion and clean energy transition.
