On March 9, 2026, IPO bound PhonePe announced the launch of the RuPay On-the-Go Card, a National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) designed to simplify public transport payments across India.

This initiative aligns with India’s ‘One Nation One Card’ vision, promoting digital transit payments nationwide.

Features of the RuPay On-the-Go Card

The PhonePe RuPay On-the-Go Card offers commuters a convenient all-in-one card solution. Facilitating tap-and-pay transactions, it works with all NCMC-enabled services, including metros, buses, trains, tolls, and parking.

An important feature is the card’s offline payment capability, eliminating dependence on internet connectivity.

Funds up to ₹2,000 can be stored directly on the card's chip, allowing offline transactions up to ₹500. PhonePe issues these cards instantly, enhancing commuter convenience.

Launch Focus and Expansion Plans

The initial launch focuses on the Hyderabad Metro, in partnership with L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited.

Commuters can purchase the card at metro ticket counters after verifying their phone number with an OTP. Payment options for topping up include UPI, cash, or other cards.

Though initially available in Hyderabad, the card is interoperable and can be used at any NCMC-enabled public transport stations across India, including cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru.

Comprehensive Public Transport Solutions

Entering the transit sector, PhonePe offers a range of solutions, including NCMC card issuance and transaction acquiring.

The company also supports digital ticketing, passes, and smart card recharges via its app, providing a complete digital experience for commuters.

Conclusion

PhonePe’s introduction of the RuPay On-the-Go Card represents a significant step towards enhancing transit payment efficiency in India. With its offline functionality and immediate issuance, it aligns well with national objectives to streamline public transport payments.
