The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will begin biometric updates for children through schools in about 2 months, as per news reports. The Unique Identification Authority of India CEO, Bhuvnesh Kumar, stated to PTI that over 7 crore children have not updated their biometrics for Aadhaar, which is mandatory after attaining the age of 5 years.
According to UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, ”UIDAI is working on a project to start updating the biometrics of children with parental consent through schools. We are at present testing the technology, and it should be ready in 45-60 days,”.
Biometric machines will be sent to each district and rotated across schools. Updates will be done on-site with parental consent. This aims to make it easier to reach children who haven’t completed their updates.
Children under the age of five receive Aadhaar without biometric data. The first Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) must be done between the ages of 5 and 7. A second update is required at age 15.
The 1st MBU is free if done before age 7. After that, there is a charge of ₹100. If the update is not done even after age 7, the Aadhaar number may be deactivated.
Updated biometrics are needed for smooth Aadhaar use in services like school admissions, exam registrations, and scholarship benefits. Aadhaar is also used in Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes where applicable.
UIDAI is also planning to carry out the second MBU (at age 15) through schools and colleges in a similar format. This would follow the same machine rotation model.

The project is aimed at completing the pending biometric updates for children across the country. Machines will be rotated from school to school to complete the process efficiently, after the current testing phase ends.
