NTPC Limited is preparing to seek approval from the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) for a 1,400-megawatt (MW) nuclear power project based on indigenous pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) technology, as per PTI reports.

The proposed project will include 2 units of 700 MW each. Officials said feasibility studies for the project have been completed, while land acquisition is expected to begin after the required approvals are received.

The location of the proposed plant has not been disclosed.

Expansion Plans Across States

NTPC is planning nuclear power projects in several states as part of its long-term capacity addition plans. The company plans to set up at least 2 700 MW units in 14 states.

The estimated cost of nuclear capacity addition is around ₹20 crore per MW. The company is targeting at least 2 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear capacity by 2032 and plans to scale this up to 30 GW by 2047.

Apart from the proposed 1,400 MW project, NTPC is conducting feasibility studies in other regions. In Bihar, the company has received approval from the state government to carry out studies for a proposed 2.8 GW nuclear project in the Banka district.

The estimated cost of the Bihar project is around ₹56,000 crore.

Approval And Site Assessment Process

Nuclear projects in India require several stages of technical studies and regulatory approvals before construction can begin. Developers are required to seek siting consent from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) by submitting detailed site evaluation reports.

The review process includes studies related to land conditions, seismic stability, infrastructure, and emergency preparedness. Officials said these assessments can take between 1 and 2 years.

Water requirement remains an important factor for nuclear power plants. According to officials, nuclear reactors require around 4.5 to 5 litres of water per unit of electricity generated, compared with nearly 3 litres required for thermal power plants.

Government’s Nuclear Energy Plans

The Union Budget 2025-26 announced a Nuclear Energy Mission focused on the development of small modular reactors (SMRs). The Centre allocated ₹20,000 crore for developing at least 5 indigenously designed SMRs by 2033.

Last month, India’s 500 MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor in Tamil Nadu achieved first criticality under the country’s 3-stage nuclear programme.

NTPC Limited Share Price Performance

As of 11 May 2026, 10:35 am, NTPC share price was trading at ₹403.55, up 0.34% from the previous closing price.

Conclusion

The proposed nuclear project is to be NTPC’s first standalone plant based on indigenous PHWR technology. Land acquisition and further clearances are likely to follow after approval from the Atomic Energy Commission.
