The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has initiated action against multiple online platforms over the listing and sale of hazardous chemicals and explosive materials that could pose risks to public safety and national security.

According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, notices have been issued to platforms including IndiaMART, Justdial, Sigma-Aldrich India, Dial4Trade, and ExportersIndia.

The action comes amid concerns over the easy online availability of regulated substances such as ammonium nitrate, gun powder, picric acid, and PETN.

Hazardous Chemicals Under Regulatory Scanner

The government said the substances being advertised online include explosive precursors and hazardous chemicals that are regulated or restricted under Indian laws governing public safety.

The CCPA reportedly sought detailed information from the platforms regarding seller licensing, buyer verification systems, import records, regulatory approvals, and quantities sold.

Authorities are concerned that unrestricted online access to such materials could create serious safety and security risks if proper safeguards are not followed.

Platforms Begin Delisting Certain Products

Following the regulator’s intervention, several online platforms have reportedly started removing or restricting listings related to hazardous and explosive substances.

The ministry also stated that the CCPA has issued a total of eight notices to different entities linked to similar violations involving dangerous chemicals.

The regulator further held discussions with the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) to review the current regulatory framework governing explosive and hazardous materials.

Government Focuses On Consumer Safety And Compliance

The latest action highlights the government’s increasing focus on digital marketplace compliance and consumer safety standards.

Authorities said online marketplaces must ensure that regulated substances are not sold without proper checks, documentation, and legal approvals.

The move also reflects growing scrutiny of e-commerce platforms as regulators tighten oversight on products that may have implications for public safety and national security.

Conclusion

The CCPA’s action against online platforms marks a significant step toward strengthening oversight of hazardous chemical sales in India’s digital marketplace ecosystem. As regulators intensify scrutiny, e-commerce and B2B platforms may now face stricter compliance requirements around seller verification, product listings, and safety monitoring for regulated substances.
