Bharti Airtel has officially launched commercial operations of Airtel Money Ltd., its wholly owned non-banking financial company (NBFC), marking a key milestone in the telecom operator's expansion into financial services.

The company informed the stock exchanges that Airtel Money is now operational as a Type II Non-Deposit Accepting NBFC-Investment and Credit Company (NBFC-ND-ICC). The move follows the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) approval granted in February 2026 and allows Airtel to directly undertake lending activities under a regulated framework.

Building a Scalable Lending Business

The NBFC launch is part of Airtel's broader strategy to strengthen its digital financial services business. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to infuse ₹20,000 crore into Airtel Money over the next few years to expand its lending operations.

Under the proposed shareholding structure, Bharti Airtel will own 70% of the company, while Bharti Enterprises will hold the remaining 30%.

Even before securing the NBFC licence, Airtel had built a sizeable presence in digital lending through its Lending Service Provider (LSP) platform. According to the company, the platform has facilitated loan disbursements exceeding ₹9,000 crore, supported by technology-driven credit assessment, data analytics, and automated risk monitoring systems.

What the NBFC Means for Airtel

Operating as a licensed NBFC gives Airtel greater flexibility to expand its financial services portfolio and build lending products directly instead of only acting as a technology partner. It also strengthens the company's ability to leverage its large subscriber base, digital ecosystem, and analytics capabilities to offer credit solutions at scale.

The launch reflects Airtel's efforts to diversify beyond its core telecom business and tap into India's rapidly growing digital lending opportunity. As financial services become an increasingly important revenue stream for telecom companies, a regulated lending platform could help Airtel deepen customer engagement while creating new growth avenues.

Conclusion

The commencement of Airtel Money's commercial operations marks an important step in Bharti Airtel's diversification strategy. With an RBI licence in place, planned capital investment of ₹20,000 crore, and an existing lending platform that has already facilitated over ₹9,000 crore in loans, Airtel is positioning itself to become a stronger player in India's digital credit ecosystem.

Going forward, investors will closely watch how the NBFC contributes to the company's financial services business and long-term growth strategy.
