HARMAN, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, will invest ₹345 crore ($42 million) over the next 3 years to expand its automotive electronics plant in Chakan, Pune, as per the news reports.

This will take the total investment in the facility to ₹554 crore ($67 million) since it began operations in 2014. The company said the expansion is intended to support higher production of connected vehicle components.

Production Capacity and Output

The Pune unit manufactures infotainment systems, telematics control units (TCUs), and car audio components. The upcoming expansion is to increase production capacity by over 50%.

By 2027, the plant plans to produce around four million car audio parts, 1.4 million infotainment systems, and 0.8 million telematics units each year. Around 300 new jobs are likely to be added over the next two years.

Allocation of Funds

Out of the total investment, ₹45 crore will go toward immediate expansion work. This includes adding 71,500 sq ft of space, with a new 45,000 sq ft production floor, four new Surface Mount Technology (SMT) lines, and setups for module and speaker manufacturing.

The remaining ₹300 crore will be spent over the next 3 years to develop advanced telematics and connectivity products, including 4G and 5G TCUs.

Clients and Upcoming Products

The Pune plant currently supplies components to automakers such as Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, and Mahindra & Mahindra, as well as to customers in Europe and North America. The company also plans to locally produce the Harman Ready Connect platform, co-developed with Samsung, which includes over-the-air updates, diagnostics, and vehicle-to-network features.

Sustainability Measures

The Pune facility produces about 317,000 kWh of power annually through solar panels. HARMAN aims to switch entirely to renewable electricity by 2030. Diesel generators have been phased out, and production lines have been modified to reduce energy and material usage.

Conclusion

The Pune plant is part of HARMAN’s global manufacturing network, which also includes facilities in China, Hungary, Mexico, Brazil, and Germany.
