Elon Musk’s Starlink is taking major strides toward introducing its satellite internet services in India. The company is building essential infrastructure, including multiple gateway stations across the country, and aligning with India’s regulatory and security frameworks to ensure a compliant and secure rollout.
Starlink, a satellite communication subsidiary of SpaceX, plans to establish nine gateway earth stations in key Indian cities such as Mumbai, Noida, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Lucknow, as per the Economic Times report.
These stations will serve as crucial links between Starlink’s low-earth orbit satellites and local internet networks, enabling fast and reliable satellite-based connectivity.
In compliance with India’s stringent telecom regulations, only Indian nationals will be allowed to operate these gateway stations. The move underscores the government’s focus on data security and sovereignty.
Starlink must also adhere to Indian laws regarding data storage, terminal deployment, and information transmission.
To prepare for the full-scale launch, Starlink has applied for a 600 gigabit per second capacity through its Generation 1 satellite constellation. The spectrum has been provisionally assigned, allowing the company to conduct demonstrations focused on meeting security compliance standards.
Additionally, Starlink has received permission to import 100 terminals for testing fixed satellite services.
While preparations are underway, the company still awaits certain regulatory clearances and has not issued an official statement through its parent company, SpaceX. Once these approvals are secured, Starlink’s entry is expected to transform India’s connectivity landscape, especially in underserved rural and remote regions.
