Air New Zealand to Appoint Former Air India CEO Campbell Wilson and Robert McDonald to Board

Air New Zealand is to appoint former Air India CEO and managing director Campbell Wilson and former CFO Robert McDonald to its board, as per a Reuters report. The appointments will take effect on September 24, 2026, when the airline holds its annual shareholders’ meeting.
This comes at a time when Air New Zealand is dealing with delayed aircraft deliveries, engine problems and higher fuel costs linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
Campbell Wilson’s Aviation Career
According to the report, Wilson, who was born in New Zealand, has more than three decades of experience in aviation. He left his position as Air India’s chief executive in early April after nearly four years at the airline.
He became Air India’s CEO in 2022. He stepped down after the airline faced continued losses and increased regulatory scrutiny following a crash last year that killed 260 people.
Wilson previously served as the founding chief executive of Scoot, the low-cost airline of Singapore Airlines. He also spent many years at Singapore Airlines, where he was involved in developing Scoot within the group.
Robert McDonald to Join Board
McDonald is currently chair of Contact Energy and a director at FleetPartners Group. He will join Air New Zealand’s board on September 24, alongside Wilson.
His appointment comes as the airline works through delays involving aircraft deliveries and problems with aircraft engines. Fuel costs have also risen, adding to the airline’s operating expenses.
Current Issues at the Airline
Air New Zealand has been affected by delays in receiving aircraft and persistent engine problems. The airline is also dealing with higher fuel costs as the conflict in the Middle East continues.
The 2 appointments are scheduled to take effect at the annual shareholders’ meeting on September 24, 2026. Wilson brings experience from Air India, Singapore Airlines and Scoot, while McDonald currently holds board positions at Contact Energy and FleetPartners Group.
