As per the ET report, the Karnataka government is preparing to introduce its own Artificial Intelligence (AI) Mission, aligning with the national IndiaAI initiative. According to state minister Priyank Kharge, the growing public adoption of Generative AI (GenAI) highlights the urgent need for a regulatory framework.

The state is considering the inclusion of this AI framework within its forthcoming Karnataka IT Policy for 2025-2030. The policy is set to be officially released at the Bengaluru Tech Summit in November.

AI Ecosystem Strength and Workforce Planning

Karnataka is a prominent hub for technology talent, housing over 1 million tech professionals, including 1 lakh individuals specialising in AI. In light of rising automation, the state has launched the AI Workforce Impact Study to evaluate how AI is transforming jobs and what future skills will be required. The aim is to proactively prepare its workforce for the evolving demands of the digital age.

Funding, Infrastructure and National Alignment

Bengaluru has established itself as India's leading startup city, attracting over $2 billion in funding, with $872 million going to AI startups alone in the past 5 years. As per the Inc42 report, the Karnataka government has announced a ₹100 crore fund to support deeptech ventures and plans to invest ₹50 crore in creating a Centre for Applied AI for Tech Solutions (CATS) over the next 5 years.

While Karnataka develops its AI mission, the national government is advancing its IndiaAI strategy, with a budget exceeding ₹10,000 crore to support domestic AI models. Several GenAI startups such as SarvamAI, Gnani.ai, and Soket AI have already been shortlisted to help build India’s large language models, reinforcing the country’s vision to become a $17 billion GenAI market by 2030.

By aligning with the national IndiaAI vision while leveraging its strong tech ecosystem, the state aims to position itself as a leading hub for AI development and regulation in India.
