AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) and OpenAI have announced a landmark 6 gigawatt agreement to power OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure using AMD Instinct GPUs. This announcement has put AMD share price in focus.

The first phase, involving the deployment of 1 gigawatt of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs, is expected to begin in the second half of 2026. This collaboration aims to meet the growing global demand for high-performance AI computing.

Strengthening a Multi-Generational Partnership

Under this definitive agreement, OpenAI will work with AMD as a core strategic compute partner to drive large-scale AI deployments. The partnership begins with the MI450 series and will extend to future generations of AMD Instinct GPUs. Both companies will share technical expertise to align their product roadmaps, optimising performance and scalability. This marks a continuation of their successful collaboration that started with AMD’s MI300X and MI350X GPUs.

Strategic Investment and Milestone-Based Partnership

To further strengthen this collaboration, AMD has issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock. The vesting of these shares is tied to specific milestones, including the scale of deployments up to 6 gigawatts and achieving certain share-price and technical targets. The first tranche will vest upon completion of the initial 1 gigawatt rollout.

“This partnership is a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realise AI’s full potential,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI. “AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced AI to everyone faster.”

Pioneering the Future of AI Computing

By combining AMD’s leadership in high-performance computing with OpenAI’s breakthroughs in generative AI, the partnership sets a new standard for large-scale AI infrastructure.

“We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to deliver AI compute at massive scale,” said Dr. Lisa Su, chair and CEO, AMD. “This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to create a true win-win enabling the world’s most ambitious AI buildout and advancing the entire AI ecosystem.”

Conclusion

This alliance marks a major leap in AI and computing innovation. AMD and OpenAI’s collaboration will accelerate the development of powerful, scalable, and efficient AI systems, paving the way for the next generation of global AI infrastructure.
