In a major shift toward fully digital immigration services, the United Kingdom has expanded the rollout of its e-visa system from February 25, 2026, allowing most visa applicants to retain their passports while their applications are processed.
According to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), the move replaces physical visa vignette stickers and marks the final phase of the UK’s transition to digital immigration status.
Under the updated system, applicants will generally no longer be required to submit their passports for visa stamping. Instead, approved applicants will receive a digital e-visa, which will serve as official proof of their immigration status.
UKVI stated that over 10 million people are already using eVisas, which are gradually replacing biometric residence permits (BRPs) and passport vignette stickers. The latest expansion makes digital status the default for most UK immigration routes.
One key advantage is flexibility. Applicants can now use their passports to apply for visas to other countries or travel internationally while awaiting a UK decision.
The application process remains largely unchanged at the initial stages. Applicants must:
After the appointment, applicants can leave with their passports. If approved, they will receive instructions via email on how to access their e-visa through a UKVI account.
Applicants are advised to create their UKVI account, review their digital visa details carefully, and verify all information before travelling.
The shift reflects a wider global trend toward digitisation in immigration systems. By eliminating passport retention and courier delivery of documents, the UK aims to streamline processing and enhance the overall applicant experience.

For travellers and overseas applicants, the change promises greater convenience, flexibility and faster access to their immigration status — without parting with their passports.
