The White House has indicated a major shift in US immigration policy, with President Donald Trump announcing his intention to impose a long-term pause on migration from what he referred to as “Third World” countries.
The announcement comes shortly after a shooting incident near the White House involving an Afghan national, prompting renewed scrutiny of existing immigration processes.
President Donald Trump has declared that his administration plans to introduce a permanent halt on migration from a set of developing nations.
He argued that past immigration policies have slowed economic progress and placed pressure on public resources, suggesting that the move aims to reduce what he described as destabilising inflows.
In a statement on Truth Social, President Trump said that the US has made significant advancements in technology and governance but has not aligned its immigration rules with current domestic priorities.
He claimed the proposed action seeks to address what he views as long-standing challenges in managing undocumented and high-risk migration, as per news reports.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow confirmed that he has initiated a comprehensive reassessment of all Green Cards issued to individuals from countries identified as “of concern”.
He noted that this review follows instructions from the President. India is not included in the list being examined.
The policy discussion intensified after an Afghan national reportedly opened fire on two National Guard personnel near the White House earlier this week.
One of the injured soldiers has since passed away, while the other remains in critical condition. The event has renewed debate around security assessments within immigration procedures.
