Japan based Fanuc, said it will partner with Nvidia to develop AI-enabled factory robots that can respond to spoken instructions and adjust movements in real time.
As per news reports, the Japanese company, which holds nearly 20% of the global industrial robot market, is moving beyond conventionally programmed machines as it enters the field referred to as physical AI.
The companies plan to train these systems inside Nvidia’s virtual factory before sending them to manufacturing sites. Fanuc has shipped more than 1 million robots, but most still depend on detailed programming and dedicated installation spaces.
Training in simulated environments is expected to help manufacturers adopt the machines faster and reduce the need for specialist coders.
The new robots will run on Nvidia computers and are to interpret voice commands. They are also built to work around people by avoiding unintended contact.
The systems will support ROS 2, an open-source robotics platform, and can be operated using Python, which is widely used in automation and AI projects.
According to the International Federation of Robotics, about 4.66 million industrial robots were in operation globally last year. Annual shipments were roughly 500,000 to 550,000 units.
Most of today’s robots are multi-jointed arms programmed for repetitive and controlled tasks. Physical AI systems aim to read their surroundings, identify objects, and handle more varied work without needing step-by-step manual input.
The robotics sector is seeing increased activity. Startups in the US and China are developing humanoid robots, and Tesla is preparing to introduce its Optimus robot across its factories.
As per news reports, as many as 1 billion robots could be in use worldwide by 2050, showing rising demand in industries such as manufacturing and logistics.
