India Overtakes Vietnam in Apple Supplier Count, Exports $2.5 Billion Components to China

India has officially surpassed Vietnam in the total number of Apple suppliers as of calendar year 2025, marking a pivotal shift in the company's global manufacturing strategy.
This development underscores India's growing importance in Apple's supply chain, particularly in the assembly of flagship iPhones.
India's Growing Supplier Base
India's supplier base has expanded significantly, tripling from 14 in 2023 to over 40 in 2025. This growth contrasts with Vietnam, which has just over 35 suppliers.
India now produces approximately 25% of all iPhones manufactured globally, highlighting its critical role in Apple's production network.
Indian vendors have achieved a significant export milestone, exporting $2.5 billion worth of Apple components and sub-assemblies back to China in the current fiscal year (FY26).
This development reverses traditional trade flows and underscores India's growing capabilities in the electronics manufacturing sector.
Reducing Dependence on China
A key distinction between India and Vietnam lies in their approach to Chinese vendors. India has adopted a "China-Light" model, reducing the presence of Chinese firms in its local Apple supply chain to less than 10%, down from 15–20% previously.
This shift followed tighter investment norms after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.
In contrast, Vietnam remains more dependent on China, with approximately 37% of its Apple suppliers being Chinese or Hong Kong-based firms.
This reliance highlights the differing strategies of the two countries in managing their supply chain connections.
Strategic Specialisation
While India has taken the lead in iPhone production, Vietnam has emerged as a specialist base for iPads, Apple Watches, and MacBooks.
However, these product categories represent a smaller share of Apple's overall sales compared to the iPhone, which remains the company's flagship product.
Conclusion
India's rise as a major hub for Apple suppliers signifies a strategic shift in the company's global manufacturing approach. With a growing supplier base and reduced dependence on Chinese vendors, India is poised to play a crucial role in Apple's production network.
