As per news reports, Google is set to develop a massive 1-gigawatt data centre and its supporting power infrastructure in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. With an investment of $6 billion, this will be Alphabet’s first data centre investment in India and the largest in both capacity and size across Asia.
As per Reuters, of the $6 billion investment, around $2 billion will go toward building renewable energy capacity to power the facility. The data centre forms part of Google's broader multi-billion-dollar expansion in Asia, which also includes projects in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Alphabet had previously affirmed its commitment to spending $75 billion this year to boost global data centre capacity.
The state has been aggressively pursuing large-scale tech investments. As per Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh is about to lock in data centre investments worth 1.6 GW and aims to scale that up to 6 GW over the next 5 years. The initial tranche is expected to become operational within the next 24 months, surpassing India’s current total operational capacity of 1.4 GW, according to reports.
To support this digital expansion, the state is ramping up its internet and power infrastructure. “We’re also working on getting three cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam. We want to create enough cable network, which will be two times what Mumbai has today,” Lokesh said.
He also highlighted the need for 10 GW of power over the next 5 years to meet rising demand from this energy-intensive sector. “The majority will end up being actually green energy, and that’s the unique value proposition that we bring to the table,” he added. However, some additional capacity will still be coal-fired to ensure a stable, round-the-clock supply.
