As per Bloomberg report, Alphabet Inc, the parent company of Google, is planning a significant expansion of its operations in India as regulatory scrutiny around work visas increases in the United States. The development highlights shifting global workforce strategies among large technology firms.
Alphabet has leased 1 office tower and secured options for 2 additional towers in Alembic City, located in Bengaluru’s Whitefield technology corridor. The combined office space across these towers measures approximately 2.4 million square feet.
The move represents one of Alphabet’s largest real estate commitments in India to date and signals an expansion of its physical presence in the country’s primary technology hub.
If fully occupied, the Alembic City complex has the capacity to accommodate up to 20,000 additional employees. Alphabet currently employs around 14,000 people in India.
Globally, the company’s workforce stands at approximately 1,90,000 employees, indicating India’s growing share within Alphabet’s overall employee base.

The expansion plans come amid stricter immigration policies in the United States, including tighter scrutiny of H1B visas. Alphabet is among the leading sponsors of H1B visas based on US government data.
The cost of new H1B visa applications has increased sharply to $100,000 from earlier levels ranging between $2,000 and $5,000. These changes have raised operational costs for companies dependent on skilled foreign professionals.
India continues to play a central role in global technology operations due to its skilled workforce and established technology infrastructure. Bengaluru remains a key destination for multinational companies expanding engineering, product development, and support functions.
The office space transaction reflects ongoing adjustments by global firms in response to regulatory and cost considerations across markets.
Alphabet’s planned office expansion in Bengaluru highlights changes in global workforce deployment amid evolving US immigration policies. The development outlines the scale of space acquisition and its relevance to India’s position in global technology operations.
