The US Embassy in India has issued a stark warning to Indian students studying in the United States, reminding them that violating American laws could have serious repercussions, as per the news report.
This includes revocation of their F-1 or J-1 student visa, deportation, or even a lifetime ban from entering the US. The embassy emphasised that the US visa is a privilege, not a right, and any legal violations may jeopardise future travel to the country.
With over 3,37,630 Indian students studying in the US for the 2024 academic year, the US Embassy's caution underscores the importance of adhering to local laws. The embassy warned that students who are arrested or violate US laws could face immediate visa revocation, deportation, or be rendered ineligible for future visas. The embassy's message, shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), was clear: “Follow the rules and don’t jeopardise your travel.”
This warning comes just days after the embassy alerted students about the consequences of overstaying their visas. Those who stay beyond the permitted period may face deportation and could be banned from re-entering the US permanently.
In addition to the warning, the US Embassy has rolled out several updates regarding the visa process for Indian applicants. One major change, effective from August 1, 2025, is the ban on third-party collection of passports from US visa centres. Only applicants or their legal guardians (for minors) will be allowed to collect documents in person. For minors, a signed letter of authority from both parents is required, and scanned or emailed copies will not be accepted.
The embassy has introduced a delivery service that enables applicants to receive their documents directly at home or workplace for a fee of ₹1,200 per applicant. To use this service, applicants must update their delivery preferences on the official visa portal.
From September 2, 2025, significant changes will be implemented in the Interview Waiver Program. Several visa categories, including F and M student visas, H, L, J, E, and O visas, will now require an in-person interview. Additionally, exemptions based on age have been removed, meaning children under 14 and adults over 79 will now need to attend an interview.
However, some visa types, including TECRO E-1 visas, G-1 to G-4 visas, and NATO-related visas, remain exempt from these changes.

The US Embassy's warning to Indian students is a reminder of the importance of complying with US laws to avoid severe penalties, including deportation and a permanent visa ban. The new rules regarding passport collection and changes to the Interview Waiver Program further underline the tightening of visa processes. Students and visa applicants must stay informed and adhere to the updated guidelines to ensure a smooth visa experience.
