West Bengal has signed an agreement with the Adani Group for a 2,000-bed hospital, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Tuesday, as per The Economic Times news report.

Land has been allotted for the project, which will include 1,000 beds reserved free of cost for economically weaker patients. The announcement was made during a programme at the state secretariat, Nabanna.

The hospital is among a series of healthcare projects announced by the state government covering both public and private sectors.

Medical Colleges and MBBS Seats

The state government said four medical colleges will be set up in Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Paschim Bardhaman and Dakshin Dinajpur, as proposed in the state Budget. It also plans to increase MBBS seats to add to the number of medical graduates in the state.

Adhikari said another AIIMS has also been proposed for North Bengal. He was addressing NEET candidates from West Bengal who secured ranks between 1 and 100 and urged them to pursue medical careers in the state.

Public Hospitals to Get Additional Facilities

The government noted that work is planned to add CT scan and MRI services, dialysis units, Special Newborn Care Units (SNCUs) and operation theatres at government hospitals. Bed strength and ICU capacity at Kolkata's SSKM Hospital are also proposed to be increased.

Residential accommodation for doctors is being planned at block health centres and state hospitals.

Ayushman Bharat and Citizen Helplines

West Bengal has joined the Ayushman Bharat programme and health centres under the National Health Mission have been designated as Ayushman Mandirs, the Chief Minister said.

Separately, the state launched four AI-powered toll-free helplines to receive complaints related to bribery, extortion syndicates, illegal liquor and unauthorised toll collection. A control room will operate between 10 am and 8 pm to process complaints. The government also announced a welfare board for police personnel.
