India's electric car market recorded a sharp jump in October 2026. As per The Economic Times report, registrations reached 35,777 units compared with 18,055 units in the same month last year. Electric cars also accounted for around 7% of total passenger vehicle sales during the month. Their share stood at just 3.2% a year ago.

The increase comes as more buyers consider electric vehicles amid rising fuel prices and a wider choice of models across price segments.

Tata Motors Retains Lead in Electric Car Market

Tata Motors continued to hold the largest share of India's electric car market at 40.7% in October. Mahindra followed with 23.7% while JSW MG Motor India held 16.4%.

VinFast and Maruti Suzuki accounted for 7.2% and 3.3% respectively. Tata Motors and Mahindra together captured 64.4% of the market during the month. Their combined share was around 62% a year earlier.

EV Registrations Cross 2.87 Lakh in Ten Months

The growth has also been visible in the cumulative numbers. India recorded 2,87,453 electric car registrations between January and October 2026. This is already well above the 1,76,817 units registered during the whole of 2025.

Among other manufacturers Hyundai recorded a 70% rise in October sales to 753 units. BYD registrations increased 29% to 735 units. However its market share slipped to 2% from 3% a year earlier.

Kia's electric vehicle sales more than doubled during the month with demand for the Syros EV supporting its performance. Toyota Kirloskar Motor recorded 189 registrations while Stellantis reported 60.

Rising Fuel Costs Support EV Adoption

Higher fuel prices amid geopolitical tensions have encouraged buyers to consider electric cars. Improving charging infrastructure and new model launches across different price points have also supported demand.
