India Post is moving towards digitising address systems with a UPI-style model named DHRUVA.

This system enables users to assign short, unique digital labels to their physical addresses, helping improve address sharing efficiency across online platforms, especially in e-commerce and gig service sectors.

DHRUVA System to Simplify Digital Addressing

The Department of Posts is developing a new service titled DHRUVA that aims to revolutionise the way addresses are shared digitally. Inspired by the success of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), DHRUVA will allow users to create unique address tags linked to their physical addresses for streamlined use across platforms.

It is expected to benefit services like e-commerce delivery, ride-hailing, and food delivery by reducing current address-sharing complexities.

Users will be able to set access permissions for apps or services, providing temporary address access that expires unless renewed, improving privacy and control over personal data.

Benefits for Delivery-Based Businesses

The new address-tagging system will provide users with a unified method of communicating their locations across apps. This initiative holds significant value for companies that frequently rely on customer address inputs, including cab aggregators and food delivery apps.

By using a DHRUVA label, users can skip manual address entries, thus reducing errors and improving delivery accuracy.

Controlled Access and Enhanced Data Privacy

DHRUVA’s design includes built-in security features. Each time a DHRUVA label is shared, the sender determines whether access is one-time or time-bound. After the set access ends, the label becomes inactive unless reauthorised.

This intervention is expected to strengthen data security and mitigate overuse of sensitive location information by various service providers.

Conclusion

The DHRUVA address-tagging system signals India Post’s efforts toward simplifying digital communication of addresses. By offering a secure, shareable label model similar to UPI, the system can address challenges posed by manual address inputs in modern logistics and gig economy services.
