Petrol and Diesel sales by state-run oil marketing companies increased in May compared with the same month last year, as per news reports.

Petrol sales rose 4.8%, while diesel sales were up 6.4%, according to provisional data from Indian Oil Corporation (IndianOil)Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL).

The 3 companies account for about 90% of India's petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel sales. Their monthly numbers are closely tracked as an indicator of fuel consumption trends across the country.

Diesel Growth Outpaces Petrol

Diesel recorded faster growth than petrol during the month. This is notable as diesel remains the most consumed transport fuel in India, with demand estimated at around 2-and-a-half times that of petrol.

Typically, growth in diesel sales tends to be lower because of its larger consumption base. However, May data showed diesel sales increasing at a faster pace than petrol.

LPG Sales Register Sharp Decline

Domestic LPG sales fell 24% year-on-year in May. The decline was sharper than that seen in April, when LPG sales had dropped by around 16% from a year earlier.

IndianOil, BPCL and HPCL together supply almost the entire domestic LPG market. The latest data indicates that LPG sales remained under pressure during the month.

Aviation Fuel Sales Edge Up

Sales of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) rose 1.8% year-on-year in May. Growth in aviation fuel consumption was lower than the increases reported for petrol and diesel.

The ATF figures show sales by all 3 state-run retailers and do not include volumes sold by private sector companies.

Broader Industry Data Expected

Market participants are awaiting fuel consumption data for the entire industry, including private retailers. The oil ministry is expected to release those figures in the coming days.

Conclusion

Provisional sales data for May showed growth in petrol, diesel and aviation fuel consumption at state-run retailers, while LPG sales declined from a year earlier. Industry-wide data due later will provide a fuller picture of fuel demand during the month.
