India’s LNG Imports Dip by 7.2% as Domestic Production Ramps Up

India’s natural gas sector witnessed a significant shift in May 2024, with a decline in LNG imports balanced by a rise in domestic production. According to data released by the oil ministry, LNG imports fell by 7.2% year-on-year, reaching 2,650 million metric standard cubic meters (MMSCM) compared to 2,854 MMSCM in May 2023.
Domestic Production Counters Import Decline
This decline in LNG imports might raise concerns about meeting energy demands. However, the data reveals a positive counterpoint – a 6.7% year-on-year increase in domestic natural gas production to 3,105 MMSCM in May 2024. This growth in domestic production helped offset the import dip, with India’s overall natural gas consumption registering a marginal increase of 0.3% compared to May 2023, reaching 5,708 MMSCM.
Rising LNG Prices and Seasonal Impact
The global natural gas market has seen a significant price rise in recent months. The JKM benchmark, a key indicator for spot LNG prices in Asia, averaged $11.9 per million British thermal units (mmbtu) in May 2024, a substantial increase from $8.4 in February 2024 and $9.3 in May 2023. This upward trend continued into June, with prices surpassing $12 per mmbtu.
The current price surge is attributed to heightened demand across Asia, particularly during the intense summer months when energy requirements for cooling purposes soar. This seasonal surge in demand presents a lucrative opportunity for India’s idle gas-fired power plants. With buyers willing to pay a premium for electricity during peak summer, these plants can generate significant revenue. However, the cost-competitiveness of natural gas compared to other fuels like coal remains a concern outside the peak summer season.
Looking Ahead
The interplay between import adjustments, domestic production growth, and global price fluctuations paints a dynamic picture of India’s natural gas sector. While the immediate future seems promising, with domestic production mitigating the import decline, long-term strategies are crucial to ensure energy security and cost-effectiveness for consumers. As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, India will need to adapt its natural gas sourcing and utilisation strategies to meet its growing energy demands.
