The Railway Board has announced major reforms in its wagon design policy, directed by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The new policy aims to allow industries to design wagons according to their specific requirements, enhancing freight transport efficiency.
Indian Railways is set to implement a new wagon design policy within 15 days, enabling industries to customise wagons based on their unique handling, loading, and unloading needs. This initiative follows consultations with various industries and trade bodies, highlighting the need for commodity-specific wagons to boost rail transport adoption.
The success of specialised wagons for commodities like cement and salt has demonstrated the benefits of tailored designs, improving operational efficiency and attracting more freight to rail logistics.
Under the new policy, strict standards for design approval and prototype development will be enforced to ensure the production of high-quality wagons. The responsibility for wagon safety will lie with the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS).

With Indian Railways nearing 100% electrification, the shift to rail-based freight movement is expected to reduce dependence on imported diesel, lower logistics costs, and decrease carbon emissions. Rail transport is approximately 90% more environmentally friendly than road transport, aligning with the vision of Green Railways and Green Logistics.
The reform in wagon design policy by Indian Railways aims to enhance freight transport efficiency and environmental sustainability. By allowing industries to customise wagons, the policy is expected to attract new freight streams and increase rail's share in the national logistics sector.
