India's energy storage capacity is projected to increase from 1 GWh to 888 GWh by 2035-36. This growth aligns with the country's renewable energy expansion and grid reliability enhancement, as detailed in a report by the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) and Customized Energy Solutions (CES) released on July 8, 2026, as per The Business Standard news report.

Current and Projected Energy Storage Capacity

The report, titled 'India BESS Market Review,' was unveiled at the India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2026. It highlights the critical role of energy storage in supporting India's renewable energy goals.

The country's installed battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity saw an 11-fold increase from 0.78 GWh in December 2025 to 8.7 GWh in the first half of 2026, with expectations to exceed 10 GWh by year-end.

Industry Insights and Developments

The IESW 2026 event, held at Yashobhoomi (IICC), gathered over 200 exhibitors and more than 10,000 industry leaders from 15 countries. Debmalya Sen, President of IESA, emphasised the significance of energy storage in India's clean energy journey.

Radiance Renewables CEO Nitin Bhatia noted the potential of solar plus battery energy storage as a future pathway.

Manufacturing and Tender Pipeline

India's Li-ion battery cell manufacturing capacity stands at 2 GWh, with targets of approximately 110 GWh by 2030. The cell/pack to container capacity is expected to reach 180-200 GWh by 2030.

In H1 2026, 47 GWh of ESS tenders were issued, increasing the total tender pipeline to 260 GWh. Merchant BESS installations accounted for 70% of the capacity addition in H1 2026.

Conclusion

India's energy storage sector is poised for substantial growth, with a projected increase from 1 GWh to 888 GWh by 2035-36. The country's installed BESS capacity rose from 0.78 GWh in December 2025 to 8.7 GWh in H1 2026, with a tender pipeline of 260 GWh.
