India Post is accelerating its nationwide modernisation drive as the Department of Posts looks to transform traditional post offices into digitally enabled public service centres.
The push comes as Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Thursday highlighted the government’s broader efforts to upgrade postal infrastructure, improve customer experience, and strengthen digital service delivery across the country.
As part of the initiative, the Department of Posts has already redesigned select post offices under a pilot programme and plans to modernise 120 more post offices during FY27.
The government has invested nearly ₹5,000 crore over the past year to modernise India Post’s technology infrastructure and implement Advanced Postal Technology systems.
According to the Communications Ministry, the objective is to make post offices faster, more accessible, and better equipped to meet changing consumer expectations in the digital era.
Several technology-driven services have already been introduced, including:
The modernisation programme is also focused on improving logistics efficiency and expanding financial and digital services through India’s vast postal network.
Under a Proof of Concept initiative currently underway in 17 states, post offices are being redesigned with upgraded infrastructure and digitally integrated service areas.
The redesigned facilities feature:
The design framework has been developed in collaboration with the School of Planning and Architecture.
Officials say the aim is to move away from the image of traditional post offices and create citizen-friendly service centres capable of handling banking, Aadhaar, insurance, passport, and parcel-related services under one roof.
India Post currently operates more than 1.65 lakh post offices across the country, making it one of the world’s largest postal networks.
Beyond mail delivery, the department now manages over 40 crore Post Office Savings Bank accounts with deposits exceeding ₹23 lakh crore while also handling nearly 7.5 crore parcels annually.
India Post’s transformation reflects the government’s larger effort to modernise public infrastructure and improve citizen service delivery. As digital adoption rises across India, upgraded post offices are expected to play a bigger role in banking, logistics, e-governance, and last-mile connectivity in both urban and rural regions.
