India has introduced its first indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell passenger vessel into commercial service on the Ganga in Varanasi.

The project demonstrates the use of hydrogen-based propulsion in inland waterways and aligns with national efforts to encourage cleaner transport infrastructure.

The vessel has been developed using domestic technology and has completed trial operations.

Commercial Launch of a Hydrogen-Powered Vessel

India’s first hydrogen fuel cell passenger vessel, built with entirely local technology, has begun operating in Varanasi. The craft uses a Low Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cell to convert stored hydrogen into electrical power, producing water as its only emission.

Officials stated that the vessel marks an important demonstration of hydrogen propulsion in a riverine setting.

Operational Details and Design

The vessel completed a five-kilometre maiden journey between Namo Ghat and Lalita Ghat, signifying the start of full commercial operations.

Owned by the Inland Waterways Authority of India and constructed by Cochin Shipyard Ltd, the vessel is a 24-metre catamaran designed for urban passenger movement.

It can accommodate 50 passengers within an air-conditioned cabin and operates at a service speed of 6.5 knots. Its hybrid energy setup integrates hydrogen fuel cells, onboard batteries and solar support.

A single hydrogen refill allows for up to eight hours of functioning. The Indian Register of Shipping has certified the vessel for service.

Conclusion

The introduction of this hydrogen-powered vessel provides a practical example of emerging clean propulsion options for inland waterways. While still an early development, it opens the way for further exploration of alternative energy technologies within India’s maritime sector.
