India and Japan signed 2 agreements related to quantum technology and medical research during a bilateral meeting held in New Delhi this week, as per ANI news.

The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in science, healthcare technology, advanced computing, and research partnerships.

The meeting was attended by Japan’s Minister for Science and Technology Policy and Minister of State for Space Policy, ONODA Kimi, and Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh.

Quantum Technology Cooperation

A Letter of Intent on cooperation in Quantum Science and Technology was exchanged between Japan’s Cabinet Office and India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Officials also discussed collaboration under India’s National Quantum Mission. Japan shared details about its quantum innovation hubs and expressed interest in connecting them with Indian institutions and research centres.

The talks included possible researcher exchange programmes, industry internships and joint innovation platforms for increasing cooperation between universities, laboratories and private sector firms in both countries.

Medical Devices and Health Research

India and Japan also exchanged a Memorandum of Cooperation involving the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the DST.

The agreement focuses on cooperation in health and medical devices through joint research projects, institutional partnerships, and capacity-building programmes. Both sides also discussed funding support mechanisms for research and development activities in the healthcare sector.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the discussions covered areas including artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, cyber-physical systems, and computing technologies.

Bilateral Technology Partnership

During the meeting, Singh said India’s programmes in areas such as clean energy, electric mobility and advanced computing could create opportunities for joint development projects with Japan.

The ministry said the engagement follows discussions held during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan in 2025, where both countries agreed to expand cooperation under the India-Japan Science, Technology and Innovation Partnership.
