India is intensifying efforts to diversify its energy sources as the ongoing conflict in West Asia puts pressure on long‑established supply lines. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has acknowledged rising concerns but reiterated that domestic fuel availability remains steady.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at MoPNG, highlighted the strain caused by the geopolitical situation and India’s heavy import dependence on the region. The government is simultaneously working on supply diversification, process digitisation and improved distribution oversight to ensure stability in the months ahead.
India continues to rely significantly on West Asia for key energy needs, particularly LPG and LNG. Sharma noted that almost 90% of LPG is sourced from West Asian suppliers, while 47% of LNG imports come from Qatar. This reliance has made India vulnerable to disruptions caused by the escalating tensions in the region.
The government has emphasised that, despite the geopolitical context, the domestic supply chain has not experienced a major shock. Officials added that there has been no immediate impact on consumer‑level pricing.
The government has already begun sourcing additional LNG volumes from countries such as the US and Australia. These purchases are part of a broader initiative to reduce concentration risk related to West Asia’s supply corridors.
India has also expanded crude procurement from non‑Hormuz routes, which helps minimise exposure to potential maritime disruptions. Domestic LPG production has been scaled up in parallel, supporting the effort to maintain supply consistency.
To improve visibility across the supply chain, the government has formalised data‑sharing requirements through a PPAC gazette notification. Stakeholders are now required to share real‑time operational information, enabling closer monitoring of logistical flows.
Despite global instability, officials confirmed that there have been no price hikes linked to external pressures. LPG supply continues to function smoothly, with 56 lakh online bookings and 55 lakh cylinder deliveries reported recently.
The government has reinforced that domestic consumption will take precedence in any supply‑related decisions. Sharma stated that authorities are closely tracking the situation and will review policies if necessary.
She urged state governments to improve monitoring of local distribution networks, noting that a few isolated lapses can hurt the system’s overall credibility. Officials emphasised the importance of maintaining smooth rural and urban supply lines as global uncertainty persists.

India’s accelerated push for energy diversification reflects the growing strain on traditional supply chains linked to the West Asia conflict. While the government maintains that domestic availability and pricing remain stable, officials acknowledge the geopolitical pressures affecting imports.
With increased sourcing from alternative regions, enhanced digital monitoring and sustained domestic prioritisation, India is positioning itself to manage potential disruptions. The coming months will focus on strengthening both supply resilience and local distribution efficiency.
