Indian Auto Dealers Flag Inventory Concerns as November Sales Come Into Focus

Indian automobile dealers have raised concerns over the outlook for vehicle sales, citing high dealership inventories, rising financing costs and weaker demand in parts of rural India, as per Business Standard news report.
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) noted that November retail sales will be important in determining whether dealerships can clear the stock accumulated ahead of and during the festive season.
October Retail Registrations Decline
Passenger vehicle registrations fell 14% year-on-year in October, while two-wheeler registrations declined 28%, according to FADA. The association attributed the fall partly to the delayed festive calendar, which shifted the timing of vehicle purchases.
Wholesale sales followed a different trend. Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, reported record monthly wholesale sales in October. However, part of the increase reflected higher vehicle dispatches to dealerships before the festive season.
Passenger Vehicle Stock at 43-45 Days
Passenger vehicle inventory stood at 43-45 days in October, against FADA's recommended level of 21 days. The gap between the two levels has raised concerns about the cost of holding unsold vehicles.
FADA President Sai Giridhar said the existing inventory was manageable at present but could become a concern if it remained at similar levels by the end of December. Dealers begin losing money when vehicles remain unsold for longer periods.
He added that inventory levels of around 45 days could force manufacturers and dealers to offer additional discounts to clear stock.
Financing Costs Affect Dealers and Buyers
FADA reported that 31% of dealers faced a moderate or material impact from higher financing costs and loan repayments. Repeated vehicle price increases have also reduced much of the benefit of last year's tax cuts.
Dealers have reported weaker demand in some rural areas following deficient rainfall. The impact has been particularly visible in the two-wheeler segment.
November Sales in Focus
November retail registrations will indicate whether purchases delayed by the festive calendar can help reduce dealership stocks.
The inventory position at the end of December will remain an important factor for dealers and manufacturers.

Conclusion
High inventory, rising financing costs and weaker rural demand remain concerns for automobile dealers. November registrations will indicate whether retail demand can keep pace with wholesale dispatches.
